I have got more "thinking outside the box" solutions. We should as far as possible employ the virtual office concept. By this, most staff will be working from home. Marketing people need not come in... only needed to attend team meetings. Other staff: well, depends on function. The savings in floor space, utilities can be used towards buying staff notebook PCs, whilst the floor space saved can be used as a parking lot for those people who have to work in the office. By now Shell should have saved a lot of floor space, so that Shell can rent out to other parties (either as parking or office whichever gives the better ROACE). I have noticed that the Humour page is very rarely updated. Why don't we open up access to users to contribute. I guess, this would mean that the Webmaster would have to spend more time monitoring jokes and filtering out the "unsuitable" ones (whatever that means). Let's face it, we do need more humour in the company. On those indiscriminate parkings(1st+2nd Fl)I suggest the money used to put up those barriers be used more effectively, like buying car wheels locks (MPPJ) and charging a fee for unlocking them (at a punitive rate). We have already seen what happened the last time barriers and chains were put up (those fellows still managed to squeeze in-between)thus defeating the purpose, and at the same time, barrier and chains has the same effect as a permanent car parked there, ie narrowing the passage-way. Rest assured these are NOT Shell employees, but outsiders, and therefore we should put adequate wheel-locks signs, penalty sums, tighter surveillance (at least for the initial first few weeks) and really be tough on these cheapskates who inconvenience us and jeopardise our safety. As far as I know, there is no way that viruses
can spread via email text messages. This is
because installation of a virus requires an
executable to be run - it cannot spread via
ASCII text alone. However, if an executable is
attached to the mail message, and that executable
is run by the receipient of the message on his local
machine, then infection of the local machine
is possible.

Some of the links on our Web - especially
those under the Internet tab are not real links -
they do not link you to the actual pages. This is
because we do not have direct access to the
Internet. What has happened is that the
Webmaster has downloaded these pages and mirrored
them at our site. So while these pages are
accessible, links on these pages may not be
accessible as they have not been mirrored
here. You will probably find this problem with
links to any page not mirrored on the Shell
Wide Web. Hope that that's of use. Doctor Sax 23-10-96 9:2:12

We should not just rest on our laurels.
I'd like to suggest that we have an internal competition to see which function
has the best home pages plus of course a wooden spoon for the worst or least updated.
It might seem that the NEWS is the worst (this debate should stop by now) but I think there are other pages which are never
renewed ever since the IntWeb was on, and this is suppose to be the information disseminator for us all.
Any support for the competition? Why Not? 22-10-96 10:16:58

I think I need to clarify this NEWS issue that's being heavily debated. SSB subscribed to the news feed from Bernama which is regularly published in their electronic bulletin board called SEBAR since many moons and years ago. We had a gentleman agreement with their Webmaster and more importantly their SEBAR administrator that they send us their news feed as soon as they can for our surfers benefit. As you can see we are totally dependent on SSB. We haved tried getting local sponsors but have not been successfull yet. So until somebody comes up and sponsor the subscription fees, I'm afraid we are at the mercy of SSB. The Webmaster can let you know more details like what news feed are available and how much it cost, if you anybody wants to take this up further. Fahmi Hamzah 22-10-96 10:2:40

I have tested the pages on some of the 486 SX pcs and found that the whole picture was downloaded in a reasonable amount of time. However I do realise that for some pcs it takes ages to complete the download. There are several reasons for it. Amongst the reasons; 1. If you are running a 386 CPU ... my sympathy goes with you. 2. You have only 4MBytes memory ... this is a physical limitation 3. You ran out of disk space ... Clear your disk 4. You have never clear your netscape cache ... you can try it now! 5. Your swap file is too small or too large ... consult Helpdesk 6. You are using temporary swap file ... create a permanent one 7. You have small transfer buffer size ... BUFFER=40 in autoexec.bat file 8. You are running smartdrv.exe on 8MBytes RAM ... smartdrv takes 2Meg of your memory 9. Your disk is very fragmented ... defrag your disk 10. You may have a slow hard disk... that is beyond help These are some of the things that could possibly cause a degraded performance on your system. General Protection Fault is very common in Windows 3.1 due the restricted way windows/dos manage its memory. It becomes more rampant if you are running netscape and office 4.x.The main problems lies in the utilization of the UMB area. The UMB area is used as a workspace for video display. Loading too many programs in the UMB means less UMBs for the video display and inevitably causes windows to error i.e GPF. Try not load high or devicehigh everything, a good guide would be to have at least 25K of UMBs. (UMB=Upper Memory Block) Webmaster 30-7-96 9:8:59

Considering that some of the Word templates must be printed anyway and cannot be filled on the screen, why aren't they straightaway converted into HTML, so thet we can print them direct from Netscape instead of opening Word. No doubt you can save the file, but why not have everything direct from the Web? Maybe you can even have a non-submitting form for poeple to fill in, but then I don't know anything on this subject. So please don't ask me to do it cause I know ziltch on 'net stuff. And please enusre that the templates are virus free if we still have them. Anon 4-7-96 10:50:8

Bilis & Basket #1 ================= Basket : Hey Bilis, "What's New" doesn't seem so new anymore these days la ... Bilis : I agree Basket, but a big problem of course, in any publication - electronic or otherwise, is how to maintain the inflow of materials. Without editorial boards & deadlines like other publications, there's no pressure to update the news.. Basket : So, is that what you suggest aa? Set up editorial boards & put deadlines? Bilis : Well, the information providers can be editors of their own pages of course, but there should be some sort of "governing body" or "parent" editorial board to give the jabs & pushes.. Basket : You say so easy la...Who's got time to set up editorial board la, this la, that la..We got Value Metric targets to do what... Bilis : There you have it, Basket. You've provided the answer yourself. Now go convince somebody.... Bilis & Basket 24-6-96 17:31:25

You should make it in such a way that the first pages of What's New, Employee's Directory, Bernama News, Employee News, Staff Movements and similar pages, do not use the Search Engine or else it will slow down the download; e.g. have the Bernama News just showing the latest 20 topics as a fixed file rather than a cgi created file. You will then only need to have links for those who really need to search. Anyway, the search boxes do clutter up the beautiful screens. Don't Wanna Search 4-5-96 11:1:15
Ref: BF5I39568101
The main problem with managing a web isconstantly manage the page. If CGI is not employedthen you'll need a person to always update the index page. The slowness that you experienceis not due to CGI but the platform on which itruns. In this case the CGI is written in Visual Basicand Access 2.0 Database. Whenever the CGI is invoked, the system needs to load VBRUN300.DLL whichis quite a big file and henceforth affects theturnaround time. This problem will not persistwhen we move the databases to the UNIX platform. Webmaster 5-5-96 8:39:56

In the Shell Malaysia Homepage on the Internet, there is a grammatical error (there could be more) that should be corrected to avoid embarrassment.Under the heading "SHELL MALAYSIA AT YOUR SERVICE" on Formula Shell Unleaded, the paragraph reads: "Special properties: It reduces engine wear due to non-presence of a 'scavenger' in the petrol, helps increases the life span of spark plugs...""Helps increases..." is incorrect. It should be "Helps increase..."Also, why use "non-presence" (which sounds contrived, advert-speak almost), when there is a perfectly appropriate word in the English language that describes the situation, namely "absence"?
